Abstract: Newland Archer è un giovane legale che non ha mai messo in discussione né il mondo in cui vive, né la donna a cui è legato, fino al momento in cui incontra Ellen Olenska. La contessa Olenska, donna intelligente e colta, che ispira una sensazione di esotismo e allo stesso tempo di spontaneità, è una lontana parente di May Welland, la fidanzata di Archer, cresciuta dalla madre, dalle zie e dalla nonna per divenire la donna ideale secondo la società in cui vive, di cui rappresenta l'assoluta perfezione. Newland dapprima diventa difensore di Ellen, considerata una donna discutibile a causa della separazione dal marito, poi fra i due nasce un forte sentimento.
