Abstract: "Sono andata a scegliermi un'eroina che nessuno tranne me potrebbe amare...": così diceva, della protagonista, la sua creatrice. Emma Woodhouse è una giovane donna intelligente, indipendente, che ha sviluppato una forte individualità e una precisa coscienza della propria posizione sociale. Con signorile misura, ella sa imporre la propria volontà a quanti la circondano. E tuttavia è straordinariamente cieca di fronte ai sentimenti: propri e altrui. Jane Austen costringe infine la sua eroina a una tardiva quanto autoironica presa di coscienza. Di fronte all'inattesa dichiarazione d'amore di Mr Knightley, il disinganno della protagonista e il doloroso riconoscimento dei propri errori di giudizio sapranno finalmente sconfiggere in lei l'egoismo e la presunzione facendo scaturire una nuova capacità di comprendere l'animo umano.

Abstract: Pubblicato nel 1813, Orgoglio e pregiudizio è l'opera più popolare della Austen, la più perfetta per equilibrio di struttura narrativa e smalto di stile, la più affine al romanzo "rosa". Le traversie di Elizabeth, bella senza essere bellissima, intelligente e ferma senza essere dura, alle prese con una società borghese in cui la condizione della donna è valutata solo in rapporto all'entità della sua dote, si concludono con un trionfo personale e sociale: la conquista dell'amore e della ricchezza. Il romanzo è chiaro e luminoso: la scrittrice non vuole intaccare l'ottimismo della giovane protagonista e si limita a tratteggiare il chiaroscuro del quadro per sottolineare l'eccezionalità del racconto e la sua natura di favola.

Abstract: L'Abbazia di Northanger, antica dimora medievale del futuro suocero, accende l'immaginazione della protagonista, Catherine Morland, una giovane ingenuamente romantica, nutrita dalla lettura di romanzi gotici, che fantastica di misteri e delitti inesistenti. Entro questa cornice "noir" si dipana una storia d'amore contrastata ma a lieto fine, nella quale la luce del buon senso e la banalità del reale intervengono a dissolvere i fantasmi e a ridimensionare i sogni. Scritto nel 1797-98, ma pubblicato postumo, questo romanzo giovanile della Austen contiene già tutti gli elementi della sua produzione matura: quel mondo caro e familiare di persone attente al quotidiano e disattente alla storia, alle prese con doti, matrimoni, rendite e benefici, che poggia sulla solidità economica, sugli affetti domestici, sulla responsabilità degli individui, un microcosmo che l'autrice sa rendere con tocco squisito e graffiante ironia.

Abstract: Il temibile coraggio della sincerità e l'arte impeccabile dispiegata nel tenere unite le fila del racconto sono le qualità della Austen che più colpiscono. In Persuasione questa volontà di rifiuto assoluto dell'ipocrisia e dei felici autoinganni raggiunge picchi che sfiorano la crudeltà, ma si accompagna anche a una sorta di indecifrabile tristezza che, lenta e inavvertita, si deposita in chi legge. Darcy writes a letter to explain himself, and Elizabeth is embarrassed to learn that she had been mislead about Darcy's character. Had she known the truth, she would have loved Darcy as he loved her. Darcy leaves that part of the country before she can sort out her feelings and make amends with him. Then she meets him again when she is touring the gardens of his estate with her aunt and uncle. Darcy treats her with kindness and she believes he may still love her, but before anything can be done about it, she learns that one of her younger sisters has shacked up with the very soldier who mislead Elizabeth and the rest of her family about Mr. Darcy. Abstract: Lady Susan is an early epistolary work by the author of Pride and Prejudice which was never submitted for publication. Jane Austen's Lady Susan was eventually published posthumously in 1871 and has since become a classic alongside Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Mansfield Park and the rest of Austen's cherished works.
