Ma il detective Rocco Klein, colpito dalle ottime referenze di Victor e convinto che voglia "coprire" il fratello Ronald, stringe "d'assedio" questi, compromettendolo sia con i suoi compagni sia col boss, che lo minaccia di morte se lo coinvolge nella faccenda. Grazie alle indicazioni di Larry Mazilli, un collega poliziotto, Rocco può arrestare Rodney lasciandogli intuire che lo ha tradito Strike il quale, sentendosi braccato, si prepara a fuggire e dà alla cognata la cauzione per far uscire dalla prigione Victor..
