Abstract: Louis Zamperini wird 1917 als Sohn italienischer Einwanderer in den USA geboren. Als Kind war er ständig in Schwierigkeiten, bis er sein Talent als Mittelstreckenläufer entdeckte. 1936 nimmt Louis Zamperini als jüngstes Mitglied des US-Leichtathletik-Teams an den Olympischen Spielen in Berlin teil. Er läuft zwar “nur” als achter durchs Ziel, liefert sich aber ein so packendes Finalrennen, dass Adolf Hitler ihm persönlich gratuliert. Vier Jahre später gilt Zamperini als großer Favorit für die Olympischen Spiele in Tokyo, die wegen 2. Weltkrieges jedoch abgesagt werden. 1941 meldet er sich freiwillig zur US-Luftwaffe. Als sein Flugzeug im Meer abstürzt, kann er sich mit anderen in ein Schlauchboot retten. 47 Tage lang treiben er und seine Kameraden Phil und Mac auf dem Pazifik, nur um von den Japanern aufgegriffen und in ein Straflager verlegt zu werden, wo sie mit den anderen Kriegsgefangenen den Launen der Wärter ausgesetzt sind. Erst im Sommer 1945 kommt Louis frei.
