Abstract: Sarah Woodruff è una distinta ex-governante inglese evitata da tutti per essersi macchiata di vergogna con un tenente della marina francese naufragato nelle acque antistanti un piccolo paese sul mare, Lyme Regis. Tutti la considerano pazza e proprio per questo suo essere considerata la matta del paese, Sarah ha la libertà di stare sola in tutti i luoghi e in tutte le ore, cosa assolutamente vietata ad una signorina perbene nell'Inghilterra vittoriana.
