Abstract: Secondo romanzo di Andersen, O.T. venne pubblicato nel 1836, dopo il successo del romanzo L'improvvisatore e un primo volumetto di fiabe. L'anno dopo seguirà Il violinista, a consolidamento della fama di Andersen come romanziere, poi progressivamente eclissata da quella di Andersen autore di fiabe.Il giovane barone Otto Thostrup, uno studente dall'oscuro passato, reca tatuate sulla schiena, e senza conoscerne fino all'epilogo il vero significato, le iniziali O.T.. Esse stanno per Odense Tugthus ('Riformatorio di Odense') dov'era vissuto da piccolissimo. Sua madre era stata sedotta e tradita dallo scapestrato figlio del colonnello Thostrup, un vecchio e austero militare, e per amor suo si era addossata la colpa di due furti da lui compiuti e le relative conseguenze penali. Prima di morire nella casa di correzione aveva dato alla luce due gemelli, un maschio e una femmina. Il colonnello Thostrup aveva accolto in casa il solo trovatello maschio, Otto, allevandolo senza svelargli la sua origine. Quando il giovane si iscrive all'università, un indegno impostore tedesco, in parte a conoscenza del segreto, lo perseguita con accenni alle sue oscure origini, dandogli a credere di conoscere sua sorella. L'ossessione del passato incupisce e amareggia la vita di Otto, tuttavia rischiarata dall'amicizia del giovane nobile Vilhelm.

Composte e pubblicate in danese fra il 1835 e il 1874, esse scaturiscono in gran parte dalla fantasia originale dell'autore e solo in minima parte dalla materia popolare cui pure, almeno inizialmente, egli dichiarò di ispirarsi. Il fatto è che – come mette in evidenza Vincenzo Cerami nell'introduzione al volume – Andersen non si limita a ripercorrere e reinterpretare il filo della grande tradizione favolistica europea. Dotato di un'inquieta tensione romantica e di un'autentica consapevolezza borghese, Andersen "cambia radicalmente la prospettiva della fiaba". Prima di lui maghi, streghe, gnomi, draghi, fate e orchi erano figure dotate di poteri speciali, dalla sapienza impenetrabile, misteriosa, ignota al lettore. Andersen, al contrario, opera una sorta di umanizzazione di animali e cose, "mettendo in scena protagonisti di sconsolata umanità, immergendosi in creature che per il semplice fatto di non esistere in natura sono segretamente afflitte da un rovello interiore". Del resto, come disse Andersen stesso, "le fiabe mi stavano in mente come un seme", "ci voleva soltanto un soffio di vento, un raggio di sole, una goccia d'erba amara, ed esse sbocciavano". Questa edizione è l'unica a proporre il corpus completo delle 156 fiabe e storie, tradotte a partire dall'edizione critica danese.
