Abstract: In un pezzo di lava, di cui gli ha fatto omaggio lo studente McEven, il prof. Lindenbrook trova un pezzo di piombo, che porta inciso il seguente messaggio: "Chi scenderà nel cratere dello "Snaeffels-Jokull" raggiungerà il centro della Terra - firmato Saknussem". La scoperta di questo straordinario messaggio provoca nel professore una forte emozione, ed egli decide di tentare l'ardita impresa, nella quale avrà compagni: una giovane vedova, Carla Goetaborg, lo studente McEven, e Hans, che s'unisce alla spedizione in qualità di guida. La comitiva segue l'itinerario indicato nel messaggio di Saknussem; ma il nipote del defunto scienziato, il conte Saknussem, pazzo e privo di scrupoli, fa loro perdere la giusta direzione. Dopo aver vagato attraverso caverne smisurate, McEven precipita nel fondo di un abisso, e viene a trovarsi ai piedi di Saknussem: tenta di fuggire, ma il malvagio conte gli spara addosso. Guidati dall'eco dello sparo gli amici raggiungono McEven e fanno prigioniero il conte. Giunti sulla riva di un mare sotterraneo, costruiscono una zattera, iniziano la traversata, e poco dopo vengono a trovarsi in mezzo ad una tempesta magnetica: sono arrivati al centro della Terra. Toccata la riva opposta, cadono sfiniti sulla spiaggia; il conte tenta di fuggire, ma provoca una frana e muore schiacciato. Lindenbrook decide di aprirsi la strada facendo esplodere delle cariche di dinamite: la Terra è scossa come da un terribile terremoto e i quattro amici vengono sbalzati alla superficie. Alcuni giorni piu' tardi, all'università di Edimburgo, il professore tiene una conferenza sul meraviglioso viaggio. Quando ha terminato di parlare, gli s'avvicina Carla, che gli manifesta il suo affetto. (Cinematografo)
