Abstract: Il titolo di questa piccola antologia, Moltitudine, solitudine, è firmato da Baudelaire ed è tratto da Le folle, un poemetto in prosa del 1861 ispirato dall'Uomo della folla di Poe. Wakefield, l'Uomo della folla e Bartleby sono personaggi assimilabili allo spettro evocato da Baudelaire, o quanto meno sono uomini inseguiti da creature dell'oscuro. I tre racconti sono esemplari della grandezza di tre fra i massimi scrittori dell'epoca e tuttavia marcano anche una sorta di anomalia, una tappa singolare nell'arco delle rispettive parabole creative. Mentre "uno spettro si aggira per l'Europa", lo spettro, l'incubo che si aggira invece sulle pagine dei romanzi e dei racconti scritti in quei decenni non è più la creatura d'oltretomba che infesta castelli aviti e dimore isolate nella brughiera: l'armamentario gotico che ha sostenuto la letteratura fantastica dalla fine del Settecento fino alla metà del secolo seguente sbiadisce per lasciare spazio a nuove paure, insinuate tra i muri sporchi degli slum, nei fumi delle fabbriche, nel coagularsi incessante di genti, merci e denaro lungo le vie metropolitane. Sono spettri inurbati, creature pallide di stenti e con i nervi a pezzi, macilente o dignitose ma sempre sull'orlo della disfatta; fanno da specchio ai timori e terrori più occulti dei concittadini tra i quali si aggirano, anche in pieno giorno.

Abstract: Celebre al grande pubblico per il romanzo La lettera scarlatta, lo statunitense Nathaniel Hawthorne fu anche autore di numerosi racconti, amato per questo da Montale e Vittorini. Borges l'ha avvicinato a Kafka per le sue tematiche di sconvolgente attualità. I racconti che presentiamo sono tratti da Twice-Told Tales (1837) e includono sia testi già classici ai tempi di Hawthorne (come Il dolce fanciullo), sia altri testi in cui successivamente si sono riscontrate singolari anticipazioni, come l'enigmatico Wakefield. Descrivendo i rapporti tra l'individuo e la comunità in cui vive, Hawthorne ha infatti saputo smascherare quelle scelte e quei comportamenti alienati, a volte schizofrenici, che derivano dalla profonda crisi di identità dell'uomo moderno. Nella traduzione di Eugenio Montale e Luigi Berti questi racconti costituiscono una significativa occasione di incontro con un classico della letteratura.

Abstract: Perfettamente costruito, quasi una tragedia classica, La lettera scarlatta ruota intorno alla piazza della gogna, nella Boston puritana del XVIII secolo. Su quel palco è costretta a salire Hester Prynne, la bella adultera condannata a portare sempre, ricamata sul petto, una grande "A" rossa che l'addita al pubblico disprezzo. Hawthorne tratta in questo romanzo la psicologia del peccato, indagando con sottile sensibilità l'effetto che la colpa produce sulle diverse nature umane, e invita a rifuggire ogni ipocrisia e ad affrontare quel male cui sembra di non potersi sottrarre se non, appunto, superandolo in una specie di tragica catarsi.

Nelle intenzioni dell'autore esso doveva rappresentare al meglio lo spirito puritano dell'epoca coloniale americana. Nella società puritana la libertà dell'individuo coincideva con il bene della comunità, che doveva essere purificata da ogni elemento estraneo, considerato al soldo di Satana. Per questa ragione le autorità imponevano stili di vita improntati a un inflessibile rigore morale. E chi infrangeva gravemente le regole poteva incorrere persino nella pena di morte. Nel libro una giovane sposa, amante del pastore Arthur Dimmesdale, manifesta fisicamente i segni della sua relazione extraconiugale con il predicatore. Nulla riesce a farla confessare, nemmeno le minacce, e per questo viene schivata da tutti, e infine condannata a portare sul petto una fiammante lettera A, che la additi allo sguardo pubblico come un'adultera. Intorno a questa vicenda si dipana il progressivo insinuarsi nei personaggi di un tormentato lavorio psichico, che li spingerà, in taluni casi, sull'orlo della pazzia. Il libro è stato fonte di ispirazione per numerose trasposizioni cinematografiche.

La rue s'appelle Pyncheon-street ; la maison est l'antique Pynchcon-House, et ce grand ormeau dont le tronc puissant se dresse devant la porte est connu de tous les gamins de la ville sous le nom de l'orme-Pyncheon. Bien racontées, elles nous offriraient un récit qui ne manquerait, à coup sûr, ni d'intérêt ni d'enseignements, et dont l'unité, qui plus est, pourrait sembler le résultat d'une préconception d'artiste. Abstract: First published in 1846 in the present form, famous English story writer Nathaniel Hawthorne's book 'Mosses from an Old Manse, and Other Stories' is a collection of fictional short stories.The collection includes several previously-published short stories, and was named in honor of The Old Manse where Hawthorne and his wife lived for the first three years of their marriage. The first edition was published in 1846.Hawthorne seems to have been paid $75 for the publication.Many of the tales collected in Mosses from an Old Manse are allegories and, typical of Hawthorne, focus on the negative side of human nature. Hawthorne's friend Herman Melville noted this aspect in his review "Hawthorne and His Mosses":This black conceit pervades him through and through. You may be witched by his sunlight,—transported by the bright gildings in the skies he builds over you; but there is the blackness of darkness beyond; and even his bright gildings but fringe and play upon the edges of thunder-clouds.William Henry Channing noted in his review of the collection, in The Harbinger, its author "had been baptized in the deep waters of Tragedy", and his work was dark with only brief moments of "serene brightness" which was never brighter than "dusky twilight".After the book's first publication, Hawthorne sent copies to critics including Margaret Fuller, Rufus Wilmot Griswold, Edgar Allan Poe, and Henry Theodore Tuckerman. Poe responded with a lengthy review in which he praised Hawthorne's writing but faulted him for associating with New England journals, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the Transcendentalists. He wrote, "Let him mend his pen, get a bottle of visible ink, come out from the Old Manse, cut Mr. Alcott, hang (if possible) the editor of 'The Dial,' and throw out of the window to the pigs all his odd numbers of the North American Review. A young Walt Whitman wrote that Hawthorne was underpaid, and it was unfair that his book competed with imported European books. He asked, "Shall real American genius shiver with neglect while the public runs after this foreign trash?" Generally, most contemporary critics praised the collection and considered it better than Hawthorne's earlier collection, Twice-Told Tales.Regarding the second edition, published in 1854, Hawthorne wrote to publisher James Thomas Fields that he no longer understood the messages he was sending in these stories. He shared, "I remember that I always had a meaning—or, at least, thought I had", and noted, "Upon my honor, I am not quite sure that I entirely comprehend my own meaning in some of these blasted allegories... Abstract: Not a great while ago, passing through the gate of dreams, I visited that region of the earth in which lies the famous city of Destruction. It interested me much to learn that, by the public spirit of some of the inhabitants, a railroad has recently been established between this populous and flourishing town, and the Celestial City. Having a little time upon my hands, I resolved to gratify a liberal curiosity to make a trip thither. Accordingly, one fine morning, after paying my bill at the hotel, and directing the porter to stow my luggage behind a coach, I took my seat in the vehicle and set out for the Station-house. It was my good fortune to enjoy the company of a gentleman—one Mr. Smooth-it-away—who, though he had never actually visited the Celestial City, yet seemed as well acquainted with its laws, customs, policy, and statistics, as with those of the city of Destruction, of which he was a native townsman.
