Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 463In this 463rd issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates a Nepalese fairy tale - "The Talking Turtle".ONCE, UPON A TIME, a long, long time ago at the foot of the Himalayan mountains, there was a king who talked too much. His name was Badahur, and from his beautiful palace, high in the mountains, he ruled many millions of people. There was also a turtle who was even fonder of talking than the King, and he lived in a pond in the King's garden. But for all the King was so great and so rich, his people did not respect him because he talked and talked about everything under the sun.The King had a of prime-minister whose name was Hazar, and he was expected to say foolish things, of course, but the King seemed to want to say them all. When the King drove through the streets in his golden chariot with footmen running before and behind, even the beggars by the roadside would say, "There goes one who cannot hold his tongue."But the turtle was even worse than the King in the matter of talking. He talked to the fishes, the parrots, the monkeys, and the birds all day long, until they were tired of the very sound of his voice. The turtle was envious of the ducks and birds who flew to and from the pond. He pestered the ducks so much that the ducks eventually agreed to hold a stick between them which the turtle would hold onto with his mouth. After a few practice runs they took off.Well, what happened next you ask…? How far did he go? Did he ever get to see the faraway places which the ducks flew to? To find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out!INCLUDES LINKS TO DOWNLOAD 8 FREE BABA INDABA STORIESBaba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 464In this 464th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates a Maori Legend - "Tiki – The Ancestor or Mankind".ONCE, UPON A TIME, a long, long time ago at the beginning of time, when Rangi-nui, the great Heaven, and Papa-tu-a-nuku, the far-stretching earth, were separated from each other, then the light shone over Papa-tu-a-nuku, the mother of Tiki, and he was the first man.Great was his longing for the power to spread himself out over Papa: father of mankind he wanted to be! Far, and far, and far he wandered over Hawaiki, searching and asking, and again and again he wandered forth over all Hawaiki, his heart full of longing. At last he came to the river at Hawaiki known by the name of Wai-matu-hirangi, and from the depth of his desire he cried aloud: 'Oh, daughter of Hawaiki, child of the murmuring water, tell me how I may become the father of mankind. Tell me where may I obtain the power and from whom?'And the river Wai-matu-hirangi answered him…..Well, what happened next you ask…? What did Wai-matu-hirangi  say to Tiki? What did he have to do to achieve his dreams? Did he ever succeed? Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 465In this 465th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates a Maori Legend - "The Creation of Hawaiki".NOTE: In Māori mythology Hawaiki is the place where Io, the supreme being, created the world and its first people. It is the place from which each person comes, and it is where each will return after death.ONCE, UPON A TIME, a long, long time ago at the beginning of time was I-o, the great atua, the god-power, and the world was filled by Te-po-nui, the Great Darkness. Te-po-nui filled all the space, from the first space to the hundredth, to the thousandth space. Then it was that the Atua commenced his great song of creation, and out of the Darkness sprang forth Life! And out of the Darkness sprang forth Hine-nui-te-po! Then out of the same Darkness sprang forth Te Ao, the Light! Then Te-Ao gave birth to Rangi! Rangi-nui, the great Heaven. And again sang the atua his great song of creation, and out of Te-po-nui sprang forth Tangaroa, the God of the Oceans! And again, out of Te-po-nui sprang forth Papa-tu-a-nuku, the far-stretching Earth.—The Earth, and Rangi, the Heaven were created!Rangi took Hine-nui-te-po for his wife, and their son was Ha-nui-o-rangi, the Great Breath of Heaven. And Ha-nui-o-rangi commenced his great movement, and forth sprang Tawhiri-matea, the father of the winds. And again Ha-nui-o-rangi commenced his great movement, and Te-ata-tuhi sprang forth, the First Glimmer of Light.Great now was Rangi's power, Rangi, the Creator! His eyes beheld with admiration Papa-tu-a-nuku, the far-stretching earth, shining forth out of the Darkness, and she was of great beauty. And Rangi made her his wife that together they might create Hawaiki, and their first son was Rehua. What did Rangi and Papa-tu-a-nuku he have to do to create Hawaiki, the ancestral home of the Maori. Well, Did they succeed?  To find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out!INCLUDES LINKS TO DOWNLOAD 8 FREE BABA INDABA STORIESBaba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 467In this 467th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates a Maori Legend - "The Battle of the Giants".Once, there was a spirit who wandered along the path that leads to gladden the heart of man; and her name was Ngawai (pronounced Nah-wai). This is her story…..Once the volcanoes Taranaki, Ruapehu, and Tongariro dwelled together. That was the time when Tongariro in her wonderful beauty had captured the fiery hearts of the two giants, so that their joy filled the heavens with majestic outbursts and covered the earth with their dark-glowing heart-blood of fiery lava and molten stones. The snows of the winter and the suns of the summer came and went from the first time, to the hundredth time, to the thousandth time, and still Tongariro was undecided whom she would prefer for a husband - the straight and simple Taranaki and the rugged and strong Ruapehu.Tongariro roused the passions of the giants: she made the volcanoes tremble! Their blood of fire and boiling stones shook them, the thundering of their voices, roaring insults at each other, made the earth tremble. Streams of lightning pierced the nights, and black smoke of deadly hate darkened the days, and the ears of man were filled with the roaring hate of the giants, and their wondering eyes beheld the beauty of Tongariro, smiling at both! At last the two rivals decided to fight for Tongariro! What happened next? Who won the right to marry Tongariro – Taranaki or Ruapehu? What happened to the lands surrounding them and how did this affect the Maori people? To find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out!INCLUDES LINKS TO DOWNLOAD 8 FREE BABA INDABA STORIESBaba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Abstract: THESE 24 Iroquois legends and stories have been told in the homes of the Iroquois for many centuries; long before the white man arrived on the North American continent. The perusal and study of these stories will, it is believed, give as much pleasure to the reader, as they have given the compiler. Of special interest is the "Legend of Hiawatha" made famous fifty years earlier by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Some of the stories and lengends in this volume are:The Birth of the ArbutusA Legend Of The RiverLegends Of The CornThe First WinterThe Great MosquitoThe Story Of OniataThe Legends of Hiawatha,  and many, many more. The American Indians, like so many cultures, built neither monuments nor wrote books. However, they did make picture writings, known in later years as "wampum." Mostly, these were mere symbols, recording mainly feats of arms. However, the Iroquois used wampum as a record of a person's credentials or a certificate of authority. It was also used for official purposes and religious ceremonies, and it was used as a way to bind peace between tribes. Among the Iroquois, every chief and every clan mother has a certain string of wampum that serves as their certificate of office. When they pass on or are removed from their station, the string will then pass on to the new leader. Runners carrying messages during colonial times would present the wampum showing that they had the authority to carry the message. Wampum is still used to this day by the Iroquois in the ceremony of raising up a new chief and in the Iroquois Thanksgiving ceremonies. If our forefathers had taken more interest in the peoples they found on the Western Continent, spending less of their energies in devising plans for cheating the Indians out of their furs and lands—a policy their descendants have closely followed and admirably succeeded in—our libraries might contain volumes of fairy tales that would delight the youth of many generations.===========KEYWORDS/TAGS: Legends of the Iroquois, Aliquipiso, American Indian, american indian ancestry, American Indian books, American Indian childrens books, american indian east coast, american indian Iroquois, american Indian legends, american indian songs, american indian stories, american indian tales, american indian traditions, american indian tribes, american indian values, american indian warriors, american indian words, animals, Arbutus, arrows, Ash Tree, assemble, Authority, beads, bear, beautiful, beaver, bedtime stories, birds, Birth, brave, Buzzard's Covering, canoe, chief, children, childrens books, childrens stories, Confederation, corn, Cornplanter, council, council fire, dead, death, death song, eagle, earth spirits, evil, fables, fairy tales, First Winter, Flying Head, folklore, Folk-Lore, forest, fox, Gift, Great, Great Mosquito, happiness, Happy, Healing Waters, heart, Hiawatha, horse, Hunter, Hunting Grounds, Indians, Iroquois, Kanistagia, lakes, Legend of the River, legends, Legends of the Corn, lodge, lover, maiden, Manito, medicine, men, Message Bearers, Mirror in the Water, Mohawk, mountains, myths, Native American, Nekumonta, Oneida, Oniata, Onondagas, Origin, Orontadeka, panther, papoose, peace, Peacemaker, pipe, raccoon, river, sachem, sacred, Sacred Stone, Sacrifice, Seneca, Shanewis, Spirit, stories, streams, summer, sun, Tiogaughwa, trail, trees, Turtle Clan, Unwelcome Visitor, village, Violet, wampum, warriors, waters, white men, Why Animals do not Talk, wigwam, wild, wisdom, Wise Sachem, wolf, woods, young people

Abstract: Herein are 6 richly illustrated tales, or rather, Greek Myths rewritten for children. The book includes the myths of:    Theseus and the Minotaur (Chapter : "The Minotaur")    Antaeus and the Pygmies (Chapter: "The Pygmies")    Dragon's Teeth (Chapter: "The Dragon's Teeth")    Circe's Palace (Chapter: "Circe's Palace")    Proserpina, Ceres, Pluto, and the Pomegranate Seed (Chapter: "The Pomegranate Seed")    Jason and the Golden Fleece (Chapter: "The Golden Fleece")Hawthorne wrote this book while renting a small cottage in the Berkshires, a vacation area in Massachusetts for industrialists during the Gilded Age. The owner of the cottage, a railroad baron, renamed the cottage "Tanglewood" in honour of the book having been written there. Later, a nearby mansion was renamed Tanglewood, where outdoor classical concerts were held, which became a Berkshire summer tradition. Ironically, Hawthorne hated living in the Berkshires. The Tanglewood neighbourhood of Houston was also named after the book. The book was a favourite of Mary Catherine Farrington, the daughter of Tanglewood developer William Farrington. It also reportedly inspired the name of the thickly wooded Tanglewood Island in the state of Washington. Not a bad legacy for a book of Greek myths rewritten for children…..!===========KEYWORDS/TAGS: Children's stories, Children's Books, Folklore, Fairy, Folk, Tales, bedtime story, legends, storyteller, fables, moral tales, myths, happiness, laughter, greek, Theseus, Minotaur, Antaeus, Pygmies, Dragon's Teeth, Circe's Palace, Proserpina, Ceres, Pluto, Pomegranate Seeds, Jason, Golden Fleece, , Æetes, Ægeus, Æthra, Agenor, Antæus, Argonauts, Ariadne, Athens, banquet, beautiful, brave, bull, Cadmus, cavern, Cerberus, Ceres, Chiron, Cilix, Circe, Colchis, companions, comrades, creatures, Crete, dragon, earth, enchanted, enchantress, Europa, Eurylochus, flowers, galley, Giant, goblet, Golden, gormandizers, gown, Hecate, Hercules, heroes, Iolchos, island, Jason, King, kingdom, labyrinth, little, magic, magnificent, maidens, marble, Medea, Minos, Minotaur, monster, Mother, nymphs, Orpheus, palace, peacock, Pelias, Phœbus, Phœnix, Pluto, pomegranate, Prince, Proserpina, Pygmies, Pygmy, Queen, quest, Quicksilver, royal, scepter, sorrow, spear, strength, Strong, sun, sword, Telephassa, Thasus, Theseus, thousand, three-headed, throne, Ulysses, vessel, victory, voyagers, water, white, wicked, world

Abstract: The THIRD BOOK OF DRAGONS is the third instalment following in the footsteps of Edith Nesbit's "The Book of Dragon's" and John Halsted's compilation "The Second book of Dragons". Here, John Halsted, author and folklorist, has compiled "The Third Book of Dragons" from numerous sources as before. In this book you will find 12 illustrated tales of dragons and serpents drawn from the mists of time. Some are friendly dragons which provide wisdom and direction to the heroes of our stories. Others are downright wicked, oozing malice and evil, leaving the hero of the story no option but to destroy the spiteful, fire-breathing, beast. Our heroes always sally forth wilfully, but cautiously, engaging these ancient creatures to save a damsel in distress, or their families, from sure destruction and banishment to oblivion.Herein you will find the stories of:Orestes And The DragonThe Three Princes, The Three Dragons, &  The Old  Woman With The Iron NoseThe Dragon's TeethThe Hunting PrincesThe Student Who Was Forcibly Made KingVitazko The VictoriousThe Three PrincesBatcha And The DragonShepherd PaulThe Dragon-Giant And His Stone-SteedThe Semi-Sentimental DragonThe Dragon Of WantleyThese tales have been drawn from old and forgotten books often with their original illustrations. We invite you to download this book and sit back and enjoy a romp through the middle-ages and medieval times when people really did believe in Dragons which could fly.==============KEWORDS/TAGS: folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children's stories, bedtime stories, children's stories, tales, tails, fables, compilation, dragons tales, boys, dragons and serpents, stories as old as time, wisdom, direction, malevolent, wicked, oozing, evil, malice, hero, knight in shining armor, saving, damsel in distress, prince, princess, banish, oblivion, tyranny, dictator, 12 dragon stories, Orestes, Three Princes, Three Dragons, Old Woman, Iron Nose, Dragon's Teeth, Hunting Princes, Student, Forced, King, Queen, Princess, Vitazko The Victorious, Batcha, Shepherd Paul, Dragon-Giant, Stone-Steed, Semi-Sentimental, Dragon Of Wantley, children's book

Abstract: Education is meant to be an enlightening experience. In order to inspire and enlighten children, they must be given bright and inspirational stories to read. They will find them in Merry Tales.Herein are 29 stories chosen by two school teachers, first, because they are stories children have always loved, and second, because they are free from much of the gruesome and grotesque which figures in so many of the early folk tales and fables of the past. Some of the stories in this volume are:The Monkey and the Crocodile – from Jataka Tales,The Hillman and the Housewife - Juliana H. EwingThe Forest Bailiff – A Russian LegendBruin and Reynard Partners – A Scandinavian Folk TaleThe Three Wishes – A Swedish LegendThe Stone Lion – by Captain W. P. O'Connor; and many more. They are accompanied by 12 colour plates and good many BnW vignettes which, together, bring life, and interest, to the tales. This book is intended as a supplementary reader for children in their third or fourth year of school and the vocabulary has been carefully graded to meet that need. The stories are in essence short, but long enough to keep a young mind interested without becoming bored. Some of the stories have dramatic qualities and will be found to lend themselves readily to dramatisation.Early in life children should learn something of myths and folklore. These tales are founded on these old treasures, but are charmingly adapted to the understanding of present-day children. So, we invite you to download and read this book of Merry Tales.10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.=============KEYWORDS/TAGS: folklore, fairy tales, fairytales, legends, myths, children's stories, fables, bedtime stories, allegories, Fairies Story Hour, childrens books, pixies, pixy, Monkey and the Crocodile, Jataka Tales, Hillman and the Housewife, Fishing Party, Forest Bailiff, Russian, Bruin and Reynard, Partners, Scandinavian Folk Tales, Three Wishes, Swedish, Pigtail, Poem, W. Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 456In this 456th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Zulu Legend "The Boy Chaka Prophesises".ONCE, UPON A TIME, a long, long time ago and far, far away, in KwaZulu – which means the Home of the Zulu, an old story teller named Zweete, also known as Mopo, and with doctor retold the story of when he first met the boy Chaka, who was later to become the most powerful of all the Zulu Kings.Mopo was born of the Langeni tribe, which means People of the Sun. This was time before the Zulus were a people, one evening, when I was still little, standing as high as a man's elbow only, I went out with my mother below the cattle kraal (enclosure) to see the cows driven in. My mother was very fond of these cows, and there was one with a white face that would follow her about. She carried my little sister Baleka riding on her hip; Baleka was a baby then. We walked till we met the lads driving in the cows.Presently we saw a woman walking towards us across the plain. She walked like one who is tired. On her back was a bundle of mats, and she led by the hand a boy of about my own age, but bigger and stronger than I was. We waited a long while, till at last the woman came up to us and sank down on the veldt (plain), for she was very weary. We saw by the way her hair was dressed that she was not of our tribe. After greeting each other, my mother asked, "How are you named?—and what is your people?" asked my mother."My name is Unandi: I am the wife of Senzangacona, of the Zulu tribe," said the stranger. Now there had been war between our people and the Zulu people, and Senzangacona had killed some of our warriors and taken many of our cattle. So, when my mother heard the speech of Unandi she sprang up in anger."You dare to come here and ask me for food and shelter, wife of a dog of a Zulu!" she cried; "begone, or I will call the girls to whip you out of our country."But then the boy spoke with vehemence that belied his size. What did he say and what  happened next you ask…? Well it happened as it has been written. But where did the go and where did they end up. But one day, as the queen was walking by the side of the river, a little fish lifted its head out of the water, and said, "Your wish shall be fulfilled, and you shall soon have a daughter."What the little fish had foretold soon came to pass; and the Queen had a little girl who was so very beautiful that the king could not cease looking on her for joy, and determined to hold a great feast. So he invited not only his relations, friends, and neighbours, but also all the fairies, that they might be kind and good to his little daughter. Now there were thirteen fairies in his kingdom, and he had only twelve golden dishes for them to eat out of, so that he was obliged to leave one of the fairies without an invitation. This incensed the thirteenth fairy so much so, that one day she appeared in the Royal Court and placed a curse upon the daughter Beauty. What was the curse you ask? Abstract: THE following 38 Finnish children's stories cover almost all of the songs and runes contained in the Kalevala, the epic of the Finnish people in a simpler, story form. These stories will lead English speaking children into an hitherto unexplored region of the fairy world, for the folklore of Finland is the least known in the West.In these 38 stories T. M. Crawford's metrical translation of the Kalevala has been closely followed. As an introduction the first story in the volume is "Father Mikko" who has been chosen as the story-teller. Thereafter you will find stories like "Illmarinen Forges the Sampo", a classic Finnish tale, an illustration of which has been selected for the cover. Young readers will also find the story of "The Isle of Refuge", "Wainamoinen And Youkahainen", "Aino's Fate", "Wainamoinen's Search For Aino", "The Rainbow-Maiden", "Ilmarinen's Bride Of Gold"and many more. While some of the characters' names will, at first, be unfamiliar, but by the end of the book they will be as familiar as friends. If this volume may in any degree awake some interest in the Finnish people, the storyteller would be amply satisfied, for his objective will have been attained.

Abstract: Joseph Jacob's first volume—English Fairy—did not exhaust the scanty remains of traditional English folktales. He retained those he did not use and most of the 44 illustrated tales that appear in More English Fairy Tales had never before appeared in print. Many of these 44 tales were recorded verbatim from storytellers. Stories like Tattercoats, Yallery Brown, The Three Feathers, Sir Gammer Vans, A Pottle O' Brains, Old Mother Wiggle-Waggle and many, many more. Some will be familiar and others less so, but all are nonetheless captivating. In compiling More English Fairy Tales Joseph Jacobs flouted the Florklorist's creed, choosing to present stories that would fill children's imaginations "with bright trains of images", vividly painted princesses, Pied Pipers, pots of gold, giants, speaking cats, Kings, Hoybahs, wise men, washerwomen, and more overflow from this volume - all bound by the common threads of basic moral lessons. Academics of the day would say they are by no means in an authorised form, and even use a mix of archaic and colloquial English. Maybe so, but the effect is justified. In the times following Jacob's original printing in 1894, the literary establishment objected to the use of such archaic colloquialisms. However, these tales have been told for generations in a form that used local dialects and colloquial words for effect. This traditional form makes these stories all the richer in a modern setting. We invite you to curl up with this volume and be transported back in time to when England had a hundred or more local dialects—a time when the words Lawkamercyme and noddle were commonplace.10% of the publisher's profit from the sale from this book will be donated to Charities.=============TAGS: folklore, fairy, Tales, children, stories, bedtime, fables, illustrated, myths, legends, more English, England, ye old England, Pied Piper Hereafterthis, Golden Ball, My Own Self, Black Bull, Norroway, Yallery Brown, Three Feathers, Sir, Gammer Vans, Tom Hickathrift, Hedley Kow    , Gobborn Seer, Lawkamercyme, Tattercoats , Wee Bannock, Johnny Gloke, Coat o' Clay, The Three Cows , Blinded Giant, Scrapefoot, Pedlar of Swaffham, Old Witch, Three Wishes, Buried Moon, Son of Adam, Children in the Wood, Hobyahs, Pottle O' Brains, King of England, Three Sons, King John, Abbot of Canterbury, Rushen Coatie, King O' The Cats, Tamlane, Stars in the Sky, News, Paddock, Mousie, Ratton, Little Bull-Calf, wee, Mannie, Habetrot, Scantlie Mab , Old Mother Wiggle-Waggle, Catskin, Stupid's Cries, Lambton Worm, Wise men of Gotham, Princess of Canterbury

Abstract: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 311In this 311th issue of the Baba Indaba's Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Fairy Tale "THE AXE, THE DRUM, THE BOWL, AND THE DIAMOND".ONCE upon a time, a long, long ago and far, far away, there was a poor young man who went out into the world to seek his fortune. He went aboard a ship sailing across the ocean; and after they had sailed for a year and a day, suddenly a great storm arose. The rain descended, and the wind blew, and it blew so hard and so wild, that the ship went miles out of her course, and the skipper could not tell where they were. And then, in the middle of the night, a great crash came, and the ship was dashed upon a reef. The waves beat and battered it, and turned it topsy-turvy, and the end of it was that every soul was drowned except the poor young man.The waves washed him ashore, more dead than alive, and on the shore he lay till next morning, when the sun warmed him and woke him up from his faint. He got up and looked about him, and wandered over the place, which he found was an island. It did not take him long to walk round it; and then he saw that it was a small island, and far as the eye could reach not another speck of land was to be seen. There were plenty of trees growing in the island, with fruit and flowers, bananas and cocoanuts, and springs of water; but on the trees were no birds, and no animals ran about on the ground. So he lived on the fruits and roots, and did the best he could. One day, to his great surprise, he saw a black thing in the sky; and, still more surprising, the black thing had no wings. Yet it was flying, and flew nearer and nearer, until he saw that it was a large wild pig. How could a pig fly through the air? He rubbed his eyes and looked again; yes, a pig it was beyond all doubt; and it flew closer and closer until it came to the island.Did the young man really see a flying pig? Once the pig landed, what did the young man do next? Did he manage to get off the island and where do the axe, the drum, the bowl, and the diamond come into the story? Well to find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out!Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world.
